What is a Point & Figure Chart?
Point & Figure charts use columns of X's (rising prices) and O's (falling prices) to represent NAV movements. Unlike candlestick or line charts, there is no time axis — a new column is only added when prices reverse by a specified amount (the reversal box size).
Why P&F Works for Mutual Fund NAVs
Mutual fund NAVs change every day but often by fractions. Traditional line charts become noisy and difficult to interpret. P&F charts cut through this noise by only registering meaningful moves defined by your box size setting.
Key Parameters on QuantLogiq's P&F Charts
- Box Size: Set as a percentage of NAV (e.g. 1% of current NAV). A ₹100 NAV fund with 1% box size records an X or O for every ₹1 move.
- Reversal: Number of boxes required to start a new column. 3-box reversal is standard — filters minor fluctuations.
Reading Buy and Sell Signals
The simplest signal: a Double Top Breakout occurs when the X column rises above the previous X column's high — a bullish buy signal. A Double Bottom Breakdown is the inverse — bearish exit signal.
Using P&F for Fund Comparison
QuantLogiq's P&F tool lets you overlay multiple fund NAV charts on the same scale. A fund consistently generating more X columns than O columns is in a structural uptrend — a better hold candidate than one with equal X and O activity.
P&F charts tell you what the NAV has actually done, not what you hope it will do. It is one of the most objective tools in a mutual fund investor's toolkit.
